Written by Kiah McBride for YettiSays Self-Love Month | “To The Girl” post series
You’ll step on the scale and let out an exasperated sigh
The number flashing on the digital display will disappoint you
Another month that you allowed time to pass you by
Means another month that your failures will haunt you
You’ll wince at the idea of being on camera
Discomfort will be felt at every click of the shutter
With every workout
And dollars spent on fitness plans
You’ll be reminded that inconsistency is a motherf*cker.
You’ll miss opportunities because of it.
Avoid pool parties because of it.
Stop shopping because of it.
Keep pretending because of it.
You’ll become toxic because of it.
Lash out because of it.
Ruin your relationship because of it.
Stop fully living because of it.
And then one day you’ll realize you’re not reaching your full potential because of it.
That purpose is passing you by because you choose to weep instead of doing the work
“Woe is me,” says the girl who makes excuses instead of change
The real root lies within parts of you lost in youth; it’s not even about the weight you’ve gained
The power of words both spoken and unspoken to you as a child sowed seeds of unworthiness
Lack of fatherly validation put you in a subconscious cycle of self-disdain
It’ll take a lot of time, grace and patience with yourself
Before you truly feel beautiful again.
With deep internal work you’ll stop tiptoeing in the shadows of your light
You’ll embrace where you are, and appreciate each step of the journey along the way
For self-love isn’t a word you can simply whisper and expect change overnight
It’s in the process of becoming that your shackles are removed and you’ll walk freely again
