Day 19: When I Think Of Home
Think of an environment where you feel surrounded by kindred spirits. What kind of people, vibes, places and things inspire you? Also consider if you are putting yourself in these environments often enough. Are you making time to do the things that make you feel at home in your life?
Home is where love is. Home is where there is comfort, where this is understanding, and where I feel most at ease being myself. Home is sometimes Massachusetts, where my family lives with a few left over friends from college and high school. Home is always London with my aunts and my grandmother. Home is sometimes a weekend trip with a few of my closest friends. And now recently, home is New York, yes… I said.
I sometimes hated living here f or the sole fact that I was by myself. But I now have a roommate I can crawl into bed with and watch Love and Hip Hop reruns, my best friend is 43 minutes away on the metro north, and I think I have come to enjoy my own company. I have people I can go to dinner with, I know my way around my neighborhood and others, and when I’m gone for too long, I long for the dirty streets, packed with people, even the tourists.
I learned this year, you have to want to make a home. It won’t just feel like home simply because you are there, you need to work towards turning your surroundings into that safe haven. I think I’ve got a hang of it now, just in time for my next move.

“You have to want to make a home.” YES. I’ve moved 11 times in the last 10 years, & I’ve started to say “Everywhere is home.” But you have to work toward it. It isn’t just that way naturally. When you finally hit your stride, though, when your realize that a once-foreign place feels like home? What a damn good feeling.
